Total Electrification

As the world slowly transitions to electric power, Lexus is following suit by readying a number of electrified models. The automaker recently announced that it will launch its first mass-market plug-in hybrid later this year, followed by a fully electric model in 2022, with more to follow.

Widespread Changes

Lexus says that this rollout is part of its "Lexus Electrified" plan that the automaker introduced in 2019. By 2025, Lexus will introduce 20 new or improved models, including more than 10 BEVs, PHEVs and HEVs. That year is also the target for the brand to offer electrified vehicle options across the entire Lexus product range.

Going Green

Lexus believes that at some point in the near future, the sales of electrified models will exceed that of the pure-petrol variety. In addition, by 2050, Lexus will achieve carbon neutrality throughout the entire vehicle lifecycle, such as materials, parts and vehicle manufacturing, along with logistics, driving and disposal/recycling.

Unique Experience

The automaker also plans to capitalize on the electrification technologies such as motors, inverters, and batteries Lexus has cultivated over the years in the field of HEVs, creating new value and driving experiences unique to Lexus electrified vehicles.

Appealing To the Senses

Future Lexus electrified models will feature DIRECT4 and steer-by-wire systems. DIRECT4, the automaker's four-wheel-drive torque distribution technology, combines highly precise drive force control with responsive steer-by-wire systems that greatly enhance vehicle reflexes, resulting in a high level of dynamic performance and a driving experience "that appeals to all five senses."

Leg Up

At the end of April, Lexus announced that it had sold $2 million electrified vehicles across the globe since the RX400h debuted back in 2005. The automaker was one of the pioneers of hybrid technology, particularly in the luxury field, so it has a bit of a leg up on the competition in that regard.

Future Growth

Lexus currently sells nine electrified vehicle models, including HEVs and BEVs, in approximately 90 countries and regions. In 2020, 33% of the Lexus models sold globally were of the electrified variety. However, that number figures to grow exponentially in the coming years.
