Lexus UX Compact Crossover is Confirmed for Production (photos)
There has been a lot of buzz regarding a small crossover from Lexus, the UX. Finally, they confirmed that production is a go, and a compact crossover with everything you expect from Lexus will be in dealers in late 2018.
1. Paris Auto Show
Lexus dropped some good news at the 2016 Paris Auto Show when they announced that this futuristic-looking concept, the Lexus UX, will finally make it to a real production car. The news came from Lexus International Executive Vice President Yoshihiro Sawa, who explained the newest addition to the Lexus crossover line will target the younger audience.
2. The First UX Version
We've seen plenty of photographs for the UX concept, however, the production version will be slightly toned-down from that crazy, futuristic design. Some sources claim the Lexus UX will replace the CT hatchback, as it is similar in size, and will likely offer a hybrid powertrain as an option. Based on the photos, if the real version is half as cool as the concept, it should be a great substitute for the pedestrian CT.
3. Likely UX Model variations
According to British Magazine Autocar and trademark filings, the Lexus UX will offer three models: The UX 200 with a 2.0 liter 4 cylinder motor, the UX250 with a larger 4 cylinder, and the UX250h with a gasoline-electric hybrid powertrain. Looking at the Toyota C-HR, which it will likely share some components with, that means you can expect about 150 hp in the lowest spec model, and 175-200 hp in the top spec hybrid version.
4. Concept Specifications and Competition
The Lexus UX Concept measures 173.2-inches long, 9.1-inch shorter than the Lexus NX crossover, that is currently the smallest in the Lexus line, and 2-inches longer than the CT200h. The UX is extremely close in size to the small German premium SUVs currently offered by the competition, like the BMW X1, the Mercedes-Benz GLA, and the Audi Q3. The basic size of the concept shouldn't change, however, the exterior styling most definitely will.
5. The Show Stopping UX Concept
The production UX may be just another small premium crossover, like the Buick Encore or Infiniti QX30, but the concept is just plain amazing. The exterior is composed entirely of aggressive curves, yet the entire crossover is tremendously flowing, smoother than any crossover on the market today. The interior of the Lexus UX Concept looks like a spacecraft from a science-fiction movie, with only four-seats. The seats are described by Lexus as "revolutionary fiber net construction reevaluates the principles of car seat occupancy." If Lexus can make the real UX look like this concept, then the future will officially arrive when it does.
