1. Worst Kept Secret

Even before Lexus officially unveiled the LC to the world, rumors of a drop-top version of the halo coupe had already begun to surface. And why wouldn't they, take into consideration the fact that pretty much every single competitor offers a convertible version of their range-topping luxury coupe? But now, it sounds like the drop top LC is officially a go, as Auto Express is reporting that Lexus has greenlighted the project.

2. Change of Plans

We received a pretty good preview of the LC convertible all the way back in 2014 when Lexus rolled out the LF-C2 concept at the Los Angeles Auto Show. At the time, the common thought was that the car previewed a possible RC drop top, but Lexus scrapped the idea so that it could focus on building more crossovers. But now, adding an LC convertible and an LC F performance variant would give Lexus the trio of cars it needs to compete with the Germans.

3. Just a Matter of Time

Originally, it was thought that the LC convertible might be available as early as 2018. But now, Auto Express is reporting that we won't see the car for another 18 months to two years. But it's clear that Lexus knows they have to build one. “I hope that we will have a convertible in the near future. We know the luxury market requires a convertible,” Yoshihiro Sawa, president of Lexus International, told Auto Express.

4. Powerful Hair Dryer

Powertrain options for the LC convertible will likely mirror those in the coupe. The LC 500's naturally aspirated 5.0-liter V8 produces 471 hp and 398 lb-ft of torque, which would make for a nice hair dryer/blower. If a hybrid version is offered, expect to see the same 3.5-liter V6/electric motor combination producing a total output of 354 hp.

5. Look at Me!

Chopping the top off the LC makes too much sense not to happen. Already one of the most beautiful cars on the road today, a convertible LC would give those who enjoy the spotlight a chance to really show off. Aside from its formidable performance, the LC is designed to be an exciting, stylish offering. And we think that axing the top will make it even more appealing to the boutique crowd.
