For the good of mankind

The International competition that is the Lexus Design Award was launched not too long ago back in 2013. The event has been a platform for up and coming designers, architects, engineers, and modelers who are working at creating a brighter future for all.

The underlying points

The theme of this year's competition is “Design for a Better Tomorrow.” The entries will be based on how the creative concepts incorporate the three fundamental principles used by Lexus. Those core beliefs are anticipation, innovation, and captivation. With those in mind, the entries will need to anticipate not only the needs of the user experience but the needs of the outside society, innovate in an original way, and captivate those with its execution.

A worthwhile investment

Lexus also expects participants to  “develop innovative designs that bring fresh imaginative solutions,” one that “should be captivating and engaging to the audience and more importantly, of the esteemed judging panel.” Once all of the entries have been submitted the projects will be whittled down to six finalists who will be announced in early 2019. Those six finalists will be developed into functioning prototypes with a Lexus backed budget of up to around $25,000 each.

Paired with the best and brightest

The prototypes will be displayed at Milan Design Week 2019 aka the Salone Del Mobile, the world's largest design exhibition with categories spanning furniture, textiles, and fashion. Milan Design Week is where the six finalists will compete for the Grand Prize. Once the six finalists reach Milan Design Week, they will be assigned a mentor who will help take their concept from imagination to reality.
