Lexus Hits the Fashion Week Runway with a Nike-Inspired UX

Daily Slideshow: Streetwear designer John Elliott was excited to merge the design cues of his Nike collaboration Air Force 1 sneakers with a brand like Lexus. Whether this partnership will bear any fruit has yet to be measured, but at least Lexus is showing us its playful side.

Very vogue

On February 9th, during New York Fashion Week, the "Sole of the UX" was revealed at John Elliott's after party. The car was modeled after Elliott's Nike Air Force 1 sneaker partnership and taking inspiration from the shoe's iconic white-on-white colorway.

Sneaker talk

John Elliott's collaboration with Nike produced a special design of Air Force 1s that dropped late last year and showcased a layering technique that created the illusion of color through shadows. That same technique was used on the UX's tires to bring some life to the milky-white canvas.

Hand-in-hand

“The first-ever Lexus UX was engineered and designed for the city,” said Lisa Materazzo, Lexus vice president of marketing. “We wanted to push that concept even further by creating the ultimate homage to urban style: tires inspired by classic, street-style sneakers.”

Making the rounds

"The Sole of the UX" will be shown at various venues throughout the year with Elliott saying that “It’s fun to partner with brands that typically live outside the fashion community because it allows us to evolve and continue to push our own boundaries.”

Will it help push the message?

With the UX priced at entry-level $32,000 and aimed at a younger clientele, it makes sense that the brand would partner with a designer to garner a bit of clout for the model. Whether this partnership will bear any fruit has yet to be measured but it's at least showing people that Lexus can have a little fun with their creations and not be quite so serious all the time. The UX is on sale now and can be had with a choice of conventional, or a hybrid powertrains and three levels of trim choices.
