Lexus Pursuits of happiness

We know you've seen those Lexus commercials where someone gets a shiny new car with a ridiculously big red bow on it and you wonder if that ever really happens. Well, we can't say that it does, but Comenity Capital Bank wants you to see what it's like with their new Lexus Pursuits Visa card.

Earning points with your dealer

The card has a sign-up bonus that offers 5,000 points for spending $500 in three months outside of a dealership. You'll earn 5 points per dollar when you spend money at the dealership and 2 points per dollar when you hit the gas station, grab a bite to eat, and take in an activity like bowling, or see a movie. For everywhere else you use the card, like the dog groomer or something, you just get 1 point per dollar.

Take those points back to the dealership

Here is where the card shines as you can redeem those points towards things you NEED to do instead of things you want to do. Go take the car in to get serviced, buy parts and any accessories that catch your eye. Or, if you've had it with taking care of your older car, go ahead and use those points towards a new Lexus. However, the sucky part of this is that when redeeming at a dealership, points are only valued at 1 cent a piece. Really?!

You can also redeem those points for some cash back in the form of a credit on your monthly statement, merch, travel, or gift cards. It is important to note that these "awards" are overseen by third-party companies so they have the say in how your points translate and terms changing.

So much for paradise

Looking through the terms of service, we noted that the card perks aren't in play in Hawaii. For all of you who wake up in paradise each day, take that as consolation for not being able to use this card. Let us folks who live in overpopulated areas rife with skyscrapers have this one over you all.

Pray they don't alter the deal further

You can use the card towards travel also but, ummm, there are some stipulations that need to be followed. You must book your trip at least 21 days in advance, which isn't too bad. However, your trip must include a Saturday night stay and may be subject to any blackout dates. Hawaii gets slighted again as your trip cannot start there or Alaska.

The bottom line for this section is if you're looking for a card with decent travel rewards, this is ain't it, chief.

What's our verdict?

Hmm, that depends on what side of this table you want to sit at. If you are only going to use this card at the dealership, then it could be worthwhile for servicing or even putting down a down payment. On the other hand, if you're looking for an all around card, then there are far better cards out there with more flexibility and better rewards.
