Stirring-up the IS recipe

The Lexus IS has always been a great example of the compact executive sedan genre. Lexus has now chosen to update its third-generation of the IS, with sharper styling and a host of new technical features.

Bolder side profile

Although the small Lexus sedan has retained the same attractive proportions, it now has chiseled the car's flanks. Dedicated followers of the IS model range will notice that the 2021 model year iteration has a more defined shoulder line. Lexus has also opted to inch-up the car's wheel specification for a more aggressive look.

Looks unique from any angle

The Lexus IS has always brought a proud Japanese aesthetic to the compact sedan segment. With this latest update, Lexus has not pandered to trends but retained a design identity of its own. Practicality is not compromised either, with the trunk capacity to carry 10.8 cubic-feet of luggage.

Taillights are connected as one

The new IS has a particularly strong design at the rear. Below the bumper are two chromed exhaust ends to anchor the design, whilst it finds great balance with a full-width LED taillight section. Lexus designers have truly managed to blend the proportions between sheet metal and light diodes, with this new rear.

Strong grille geometry

Striking grille patterns and sizes have been a Lexus design signature for the last decade. With new IS, this is no different. The spindle grille is imposing and gives the IS terrific road presence. Designers and engineers have also managed to incorporate the latest triple-beam headlight technology, which creates a confident view of the road ahead, at night.

New BBS wheels

We previously mentioned new wheel sizes and options earlier with what we think are much better designs than offered in the past. Lexus will have a factory standard 18" wheel, with a larger 19" alloy as an option. The 19" wheel is sourced from BBS and features a very open design, with ten spokes. It perfectly combines functional strength and a pleasing appearance as a quality wheel should.

Bigger screen options

The IS interior has benefited from a significant digital upgrade. Bold red leather remains a cabin color option, but owners can now also order a large 10.3-inch touchscreen, to control the car's infotainment. Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, and Amazon Alexa compatibility are now coded into the car's infotainment system as standard.

Lighter suspension bits

Although there are no new engines added to the IS range, the 2021 model year car is larger in size, with an evolved suspension configuration. The new IS is 1.2-inches longer and wider, whilst being 0.2-inches lower. Lexus has also found new machining techniques for the IS suspension control arms, stabilizer bars, and coil springs, making them all lighter in weight - and therefore more responsive to both compression and rebound action. The result? Sharper responses when cornering.
