Classic Lexus Cars Now Collectibles (photos)

Lexus debuted nearly 30 years ago, and with the general rule being cars more than 25 years old are classic, some of those early models now qualify. Let's take a look at what has showed up at Japanese nostalgia car shows recently.

1. Off and Running

Lexus debuted in the USA with the 1990 model year, 27 years ago. Their cars are so well built that plenty are still on the road as daily drivers and few think of them as classics, but some of them already are, and more are quickly approaching that status. Examples are already appearing at car shows in the L.A. area, Hawaii, and back home in Japan.

2. Lexus SC400

No matter the car, the hot coupe version is usually the one collector's most treasure. The Lexus SC400 combines fabulous good looks and plenty of sweet smooth V8 power to take you anywhere at speeds you ought to be cruising at. Unfortunately, fast coupes tend to get modded and beat up on the old used car market. Find one that wasn't lowered too far, and has a clean interior and you should be able to make a nice cruiser out of it. There's a huge gallery from the 21st All Toyotafest here.

3. Lexus SC300

The Lexus SC300 has two things going for it even over the V8 powered SC400 coupe. First, you could get a manual transmission in the SC300, which makes it drive sportier. Second, it has the 2JZ-GE straight six motor only slightly different from the Toyota Supra, which has been known to make huge power with a turbo added. This one was spotted at Toyotafest 2016.

4. Lexus ES250

The Lexus ES250 is derided by some as just a fancy Camry, but it is more than that. In fact, some people in Japan actually think they are collectible and rare, and refer to them as USDM cars, because the Japanese version was slightly different. Japan actually didn't get anything branded as a Lexus until recently, actually. And even in the US, these cars are rare when compared to other mass market vehicles. The USDM Jam celebrates cars like this and other Japanese American models every year.

5. Lexus LS400

The LS400 was the make or break car for Lexus, and if it hadn't been amazing there would be no coming back for the brand. Luckily, it was and still is amazing. The R & D people at Toyota did all their homework and produced a timeless luxury sedan, with just enough sportiness to become an engaging classic. This one was shot at the Japanese Neoclassic show again by Speedhunters.

6. Lexus ES300

The second generation ES300 became the bread and butter car that made Lexus a power in the marketplace. Sure, the LS is awesome, but no other brand offered midsize car buyers more luxury, durability, and performance for the money than Lexus did in the ES. These cars lead to the demise of all the near luxury American brands like Oldsmobile, Mercury, and Pontiac. Speedhunters shot this VIP style ES at Toyotafest way back in 2012.
