RX300

The RX isn't the first vehicle that comes to mind when you think of a first car, but earlier RX300 models are a solid choice for youngsters. They're reliable, comfortable, and most importantly, cheap. They're also quite spacious, making the RX a practical ride for any youngster who might want to give their generous parents a few "thank you" rides if you catch our drift!

SC 300

Like our other examples here, early SC models are cheap and reliable. They're also easy to work on if you're so inclined. It's still best to find one that isn't only in good shape, but comes with a complete maintenance history as well, however. Of course, this is true with any used car purchase, not just a Lexus. But there are plenty of very well taken care of SCs out there, even today.

ES 300

The ES is essentially a gussied up Toyota Camry, and that's definitely not a bad thing. They've also been one of the better selling Lexus models for years. Which of course means that you'll find a ton of them on the used car market. And they're dirt cheap - in many cases just as cheap as a similar used Camry. Plus, they're front wheel drive and not incredibly powerful, which makes hooning a little more difficult.

GS 300/400/430

2nd generation Lexus GS models are virtually bulletproof and incredibly cheap at the moment. They're a bit larger than the IS, which can obviously be a concern with younger folks still learning to drive. But if they can handle the mass, you won't find a much better first car. Plus, these things are cool enough that your kid will probably be the envy of his schoolmates for quite some time. That means extra parent points, in case you need some.

IS 250/300/350

The Lexus IS is an obvious choice for a young driver for many reasons. The compact sports sedan has a smaller footprint, making it easier to maneuver. It's also economical and reliable. The IS 250 doesn't produce a ton of power, which can be a good thing for new drivers. And used examples are pretty darn cheap. Just be aware of carbon build up issues with the 250, which are well documented in several Club Lexus threads.

If your young driver isn't the lead-footed type, an IS300 or IS350 is a solid and reliable choice. Just shoot for an all wheel drive model if you live in the snow belt and junior should be good to go. Regular maintenance is typically all it takes to keep these cars on the road for a very long time. Plus, any of these options are priced around the same as a Toyota Camry on the used car market.
