5 Best Years For The Lexus SC Sport Coupe
In the market for a Lexus SC luxury sport coupe? These are the model years our forum members recommend the most.
1. 1995 SC400
If you prefer the clean grill-less look, 1995 is the last year, but it is the mechanical differences make it the preferred choice for enthusiasts over the 1996 SC. The 1995 model year was the last for the more tuner friendly OBDI system, before OBDII rolled out. It was also the last year for the non-interference motor, which is an important maintenance consideration because with the later motors, timing belt failure could cause serious engine damage.
2. 1997 SC400
The 1997 models carried over the styling changes introduced in 1996 that many folks prefer. There was a slight bump in performance, but they are still down on power compared to the 1998 model. A lot of enthusiasts, however, feel like the 1UZ-FE engine used in the '97 is more receptive to modifications and more bulletproof than the later versions. If you prefer the straight six SC300, 1997 is the last year you can find a manual transmission version.
3. 1998 SC400
The biggest reason people like this model is that it combines the styling update from 1996 with a big power boost, thanks to the introduction of variable valve timing. The V8 powered SC 400 rose to 290 hp and 300 lb-ft of torque, while the inline six SC 300 jumped to 225 hp and 220 lb-ft of torque. That was good enough to knock 0-60 times down four tenths of a second (to 6.3 seconds) over the previous model years.
4. 1999-2000
For most, the last couple of years of the 1st generation run represented the very best of the SC simply because they are the newest, with the fewest miles and most current upgrades. the last years had the power upgrade of the 1998 version and posted the fastest acceleration times of all first gen SC's. These years had lots to love - variable valve timing, a 5-speed automatic transmission, a 3-spoke steering wheel, and great styling. The only problem is, they're getting harder and harder to find.
5. 2006-2010
This is kind of a cop out, but there is really not much difference between these four years. A lot of people hate on the second generation SC for a variety of reasons. But the sporty convertible presents a lot of car from 2006 until it was discontinued in 2010. These cars have loads of modern technology features, from Bluetooth to next generation navigation and voice commands. Exterior styling changes make 2006+ models much more modern looking as well, and they gained a 6-speed automatic transmission.
