5 Best Years For The ES

In the market for a Lexus ES sedan? These model years were deemed the best of the bunch by our forum members.

By Brett Foote - April 10, 2017
1994-1996 (2nd Generation)
2000-2001 (3rd Generation)
2004-2006 (4th Generation)
2010-2012 (5th Generation)
2016-Present (6th Generation)

1. 1994-1996 (2nd Generation)

The first generation Lexus ES, shared many similarities with the Toyota Camry, was seen as a mere "brand engineering" exercise by many. So Lexus switched things up for the car's first redesign, using styling cues from the Toyota Windom and LS 400. The 2nd gen ES 300 was bigger, curvier, more powerful, and better handling than its predecessor. If you are looking at a 2nd gen ES, the 1994-96 models came with a nice styling refresh and the new, all-aluminum 1MZ-FE engine widely considered to be virtually bulletproof.

2. 2000-2001 (3rd Generation)

The 3rd generation of the Lexus ES brought a number of improvements to go with an evolutionary styling update. They featured a 30% stiffer body, reflector headlights (instead of projectors), and a much more upscale interior. The 3rd gen ES was longer than its predecessor, yet weighed the same and performed better in the wind tunnel. It also came equipped with the new Adaptive Variable Suspension and a slight bump in power. For the 2000 model year, the ES received an attractive facelift, optional HID headlights, and some interior upgrades.

3. 2004-2006 (4th Generation)

The introduction of the IS meant that the ES was no longer Lexus' entry level car. So the automaker gave the sedan a more upscale refresh for its 4th generation. Inside, California Walnut wood trim and a number of nice features, like rain sensing wipers and rear sunblind, abound that are similar to the flagship LS 430. The new ES also featured an electronic drive-by-wire throttle, electronic brake-force distribution, and brake assist. In 2004, the ES gained power. And for the 2005-2006 model years, a styling refresh inside and out helped the 4th gen ES go out gracefully.

4. 2010-2012 (5th Generation)

Lexus continued to improve the ES for its 5th generation, moving it more upscale and prioritizing comfort overall over performance. Yet power increased substantially - from 225 to 272 hp, and Lexus introduced variable valve timing on the 3.5 liter V6. Technology and comfort features abound, including Lexus Park Assist, a SmartAccess key fob, power seat cushion extender, and a 14-speaker Mark Levinson premium audio system. A mid-cycle facelift in 2010 gave the ES a cleaner and very modern appearance, and a number of previously optional equipment became standard.

5. 2016-Present (6th Generation)

The 6th generation ES debuted for the 2013 model year, gaining a hybrid drivetrain option for the first time. The newest ES shares more mechanically with the Toyota Avalon than the Toyota Camry, including an identical wheelbase. The ES received a facelift for the 2016 model year that added elements of Lexus' current design language. The latest and greatest version of the Lexus sedan is also the automaker's first vehicle manufactured in the United States. And as the ES is far from Lexus' most popular model, there are plenty of great lease and sales deals to be found on a car that has won numerous awards.
