Ultimate Overlander

The Lexus LX has long been a popular choice for those looking to build a luxurious overlanding vehicle, which makes sense given its solid bones and architecture shared with the legendary Toyota Land Cruiser. However, the debut of the all-new 2022 LX600 doesn't necessarily mean that those days are over either, as this new build from the folks at Overland Expo will serve as this year's Ultimate Overland Vehicle at that particular event.

Solid Basis

The LX's reputation for making a great off-road vehicle, along with the fact that it's as close to a Land Cruiser as we can now get in the U.S. made it the perfect choice to serve as this year's overland build of choice. Even in stock form, it's a competent off-roader, but Overland Expo knew that it could easily take the big, luxurious SUV to the next level with the right mix of upgrades.

Living Quarters

With the Off Grid Trailers Pando 2.0 behind it, this custom LX is chock full of upgrades, making it the most heavily modified version of the new model we've seen yet. That particular camper features eight inches of wheel travel, 24 inches of ground clearance, and a 360-degree articulating hitch, along with amenities such as queen-size sleeping quarters, air conditioning, a 23ZERO Shower Enclosure, hot water on-demand system, 1,000-pound capacity integrated roof rack, and a rear galley kitchen with a dual-burner cooktop, hot- and cold-water sink, and up to 33 gallons of onboard potable fresh water.

Exterior Upgrades

As for the LX itself, the SUV has been fitted with an ARB Summit MKII front bumper, a SOLO Series 12.5 winch, ARB Intensity IQ lights, a Midland Radios Bull Bar Antenna, Prinsu roof rack, Armadillo A2 rooftop tent, Peregrine 270 awning, and Vision X’s Overland Area Lights.

Suspension Upgrades

Underneath, the LX's suspension has been fortified with Total Chaos upper and lower control arms and rear links, as well as Radflo 2.5 Diameter Remote Reservoir shocks and coilovers, which gives the SUV a total of 2.5 inches of lift and far better wheel travel than stock. The whole thing rides on a set of 33x12.5R17 Kenda Klever R/T tires, which are wrapped around 17-inch satin black Compression wheels from ICON Dynamics.

Host of Amenities

Out back, this ultimate overlanding rig features a dual swing-out rear bumper from CBI Offroad, a five-gallon jerry can and a set of traction boards, and Goose Gear’s new Ultimate Chef Package for LX600, which includes a CFX3 45 fridge from Dometic. Also included in that package are things like tables, chairs, and a hydration jug - pretty much everything one might need for a weekend out on the trails.

Fitting of the Title

“LX nameplate has been a leading brand in the American overlanding market for years. With the all-new LX600, we saw an opportunity to work with our exhibitors to develop world-class overlanding products for the pinnacle full-size 4×4 SUV platform in the U.S.,” said Emerald Consumer Events Marketing SVP Linday Hubley. “Furthermore, off-road trailers have become a significant part of the overland segment. We knew the Ultimate Overland Vehicle wouldn’t be complete without an Off Grid Trailer in tow. The result is a vehicle and trailer combination truly worthy of its ‘ultimate’ moniker.”
