Coming this fall

The brand new ES has been improved on by Lexus in practically every facet to better position its place on the market for consumers. The mid-size sedan is now longer, lower, and wider than before with some chassis upgrades to make the drive just as compelling as the sporty direction of the design would suggest. The ES sits on the GA-K Toyota New Global Architecture platform that uses high-tensile steel to reduce weight. To bump up the car's responses the car has a multi-link rear suspension design, rack-mounted electric power steering and a V-brace behind the rear seat.

Bigger, stronger, faster

As was mentioned previously about the car's dimension growing, the ES is now 2.6 inches longer, 0.2 inches lower, and 1.8 inches wider than it's outgoing predecessor, with a 2-inch longer wheelbase. The underpinnings of the new ES are of those it shares with the 2019 Avalon and so it gets the pair of powertrains as well.  The ES 350 models use a 3.5-liter NA V6 producing 302 horsepower and 267 lb-ft of torque, hooked up to an 8-speed automatic transmission. The ES 300h makes use of Toyota's 2.5-liter Atkinson-cycle I4 engine found in the fourth gen hybrid drive system. The total system is good for 215 horsepower which Lexus states will net drivers about 44 mpg combined. Both of these powertrains use front-wheel drive exclusively.

F sport options

A new F Sport trim is available for those who opt for the ES 350 but makes no changes to the powertrain. However, the package will net buyers with an Adaptive Variable Suspension (AVS) system that was first introduced on the LC. F Sport models will also get a Sport+ drive setting that tunes the engine, transmission, and suspension to their sharpest settings and enhances the engine sounds with a more robust note. There will also be a special blacked-out vertical grille, a rear spoiler, a darker lower valance, and an exclusive Ultra Sonic Blue Mica 2.0 paint job.

Give and take

On the tech front, the ES finally becomes the first Lexus vehicle to get Apple CarPlay, but still won't have Android Auto. For ES models equipped with navigation, there will be a 12.3-inch infotainment display with a built-in Verizon Wi-Fi hotspot. If the navigation box doesn't get checked on the build sheet then there won't be a hotspot and the infotainment experience will be dropped down to an 8-inch display. Both of the systems are controlled by the polarizing interface that is Lexus' Remote Touch trackpad. The interior has been improved by looking considerably less cluttered than before.

Will you be test driving it?

The new ES also recognizes Amazon Alexa commands from the car to the driver's home and from the home to the car. Going along with the updated instrument cluster, there is also an available head-up display that will show key information on the windshield in front of the driver. Accenting the interior will be matte bamboo, mocha wood trim, and linear espresso, while on F Sport models that have a wavy metallic trim.

The 2019 Es will go on sale here in the United States this September with pricing relatively similar to the outgoing car's numbers of $39,945 for the ES350 and $42,815 for the ES300h.
