Lexus RX: How to Remove Roof Rails

The roof rack on the Lexus RX could be beneficial, but if it's not beneficial to you or you're looking for a sportier look, here's how to remove it yourself.

This article applies to the Lexus RX (2005-2013).

Whether you find your RX's roof rack to be an unnecessary extra or simply prefer the sleeker look without a roof rack, you don't have to pay the dealership to perform this task. If your RX comes with cross bars, you'll need to remove them first. However, if it only has a roof rack, you can jump right into the removal process. Many users recommend buying patches to cover up the bolt holes after removing the roof rack.

Materials Needed

  • 8mm screwdriver
  • Removal kit (optional)
  • Replacement bolts and patches
  • Cloth

Step 1 - Loosen the end cap and remove the cross rails

Start the process by grabbing a hold of the end cap with your right hand, keeping it close to the end of the rear cap. Place your left hand next to your right hand as you face the car. Squeeze the back side of the cap with four fingers while simultaneously pulling upwards towards yourself. This should loosen the cap enough so that it comes off and the rails are loose enough to slide easily off the rail.

Step 2 - Remove the roof rack handles

Grip the roof rack handle towards the front of the vehicle. Simultaneously lift it up while using a prying tool such as the screwdriver. Remove any bolts that are in place. The rack should eventually slide out. Repeat this step on the other side of the car.

Step 3 - Fill in any holes

After removing the roof rack, you'll have to bolt the exposed brackets if your vehicle has them. To do this, simply screw the bolts into the correct spaces. If your vehicle has a cover, slide it over the bolts once they are properly in place.

Pro Tip

It may be necessary to cover any exposed areas with a plastic cover. Those with a panoramic roof may be able to check at the dealership for replacement panoramic moon roof inserts.
