This article applies to the Lexus IS (2005-2013).

Replacing the rear shocks on your Lexus IS is part of the maintenance required to keep your car running well. Generally, you will know when it's time to replace the shocks when your car does not take bumps as well, there is a noticeable let down in suspension, or when your turns are not as sharp. You should always replace your shocks in pairs: either two in the front or two in the rear in the struts, or all four together.

Materials Needed

  • Complete wrench and socket set
  • Floor jack
  • Jack stands
  • Allen wrenches and hex sockets, including a torque wrench
  • Coil spring compressor
  • Flathead screwdriver

Step 1 - Access the rear strut mount

Remove the interior lining from the trunk in order to gain access to the rear strut mounts. You can remove it by using a flathead screwdriver to pry off the clips holding it in place.

Step 2 - Remove top strut nuts

Use a socket wrench to remove the nuts holding the top of the rear struts in place. These will be located in the trunk on the the wheel well.

Step 3 - Raise the car

Use the floor jack to raise the car. Place the jack stands in position, and confirm that the car is stable. The Lexus will have grooves specifically made for the jack stand on the frame rails. Remove the rear tires from the car. At this stage you may remove the brake caliper if you feel it will be difficult to work around. If you do remove the brake caliper, set it aside, or wire it into a safe area until you are ready for reassembly.

Step 4 - Remove the lower bolts connecting the strut

Use a 12mm socket wrench to remove the bolt holding the struts on the inside of the rear fender. Use the same wrench to remove the strut from the rear sway bar link connected to the rear suspension arm. Use the 19 millimeter wrench to remove the bolt which holds the suspension arm to the rear frame.

Step 5 - Remove the strut

Place strut into the spring compressor and apply pressure. Remove the shock absorber located inside.

Warning

Be very careful when compressing the spring, as it can be extremely dangerous. Compress each side of it slowly, and keep going back and forth until it is fully compressed.

Step 6 - Replace the shock absorber

If necessary, remove the entire shock assembly including the springs. Leakage on the shock absorber is a sign of a bad shock. Refer to the owner's manual to confirm that you have purchased parts that are compatible for your Lexus IS suspension system.

Step 7 - Reassemble the strut

Install in reverse order from the previous instructions.

  • Re-install the strut.
  • Reconnect the brake calipers.
  • Tighten the bolts and screws.
  • Refer to the owner's manual or online specifications to confirm the torque rate for all of the bolts that you are reassembling.

Step 8 - Replace the wheels on your car

Install the wheels, lower the car, and you're finished.

Pro Tip

Take a slow drive around a quiet neighborhood. Listen to any noise coming out of the rear shocks; if you hear something, consult a professional. The car should feel smooth and be quiet on the road.
