This article applies to the Lexus IS, GS, ES, and RX (2005-2013).

AFS, which stands for Adaptive Front Lighting System, is designed to adapt your light to the road ahead to give you maximum visibility. It is recommended to keep your AFS system on, as it is an excellent safety advantage on the road. The AFS warning light usually appears after installing lowering springs. When the sensor does not realize that you have lowered the height of the car, it will adjust the lights erratically and out of sync with the rest of the vehicle, which in turn will cause the AFS warning light to trigger. The instructions below offer an easy fix for this problem.

Tools Needed

  • 10mm socket wrench

Step 1 - Park your car on a flat surface

Make sure your car is parked on a flat surface. Turn your headlights on to shine against a wall or another object whereby you can see the changes in headlight level.

Step 2 - Locate the AFS sensor

Most Lexus IS series will have the AFS sensor behind the rear wheel of the driver's side. For the RX, you will find it behind the rear wheel on the passenger side. Confirm with your owner's manual or online specifications. The AFS sensor is tucked behind the wheel, so if at all possible, do not remove the rear tire to gain access to the AFS sensor, as that may affect the leveling of the car and disturb the final headlight position.

Step 3 - Use your 10 millimeter socket wrench to adjust the AFS sensor

Move the sensor bar up to adjust your lights down, and move the sensor bar down to adjust your lights up. You will want to confirm your lights are completely centered after the adjustment is completed. The center of the light should not be more than 3.5 feet from the ground.
