Default Offset? What is it?

Hello,
I was looking in the wheel forum and I keep coming across the word "offset". I vaguely know what this means, Ive read about it and seen it but it has never sunk in. Can you please just tell me what it is briefly? Is it just how far in the rim the hub connects to and does it determine the size of the lip/deep dish look? I don't know.
Thank You for your time,
Brian

PS. could anyone also reccomend a nice setup for an sc300. Prefferably 18 inch with a staggered look and deeper dish rears? Or point me to the right thread?
Thanks again.
Brian

yes offset has to do with the where the hub and the center of the rim line up.

heres a write up on wheels in general that will probably explain it better.
