Is this what I need?
I'm getting some Espelir springs and L-tuned shocks. THe shocks have arrived and am waiting on the springs. Now I want to do the install myself. Here is my question:
Is this the tool I need to compress my springs? Spring Compressor |
I don't want to discourage you, but unless you feel very comfortable doing this, you may want to leave it to a pro, or have an experienced person assist you.
As far as spring compressors go, the ones you can buy for $20 or borrow from the parts stores are rubbish (and dangerous) IMHO (your link doesnt work right). I've used the Branick units in the past. They are expensive (around $550) but work wonderfully. I just got a "clamshell" type, but haven't tried it yet. The GS isn't too bad to drop. Easier than an Audi A4 Quattro, but harder than a Maxima. One of the workers in my company tried to install his own springs.
During compression and installation, the tool released a compressed spring right toward his face. He suffered a broken nose and 35 stiches on his face. Brandon, don't do it dude...let someone else do that for you. Its not worth the risk. |
B...make sure you use stock bump stop on the shocks:)

Future...
I would get some basic ones from a local shop...rent them if you can, you won't use them again anyway. If someone knocks his teeth out with a spring, then you would have to be dealing with something in HIGH compression. The factory setup is not that tight. If you go with a spring compressor get one with safety clips. For the most part, you can go without them. Changing the suspension is just a common sense job that if you take your time, have the correct tools, and care, you will be fine. I would suggest, a torque wrench, ball joint separation tool, and a nice set of sockets. MW |
just pay someone else the $150.00 or so at a local shop who knows what they're doing. That's what I did.:)
