Crap!

I was dismounting my wheels today to paint my calipers and wheel wells, when I noticed on one of my tires, just one, that the inner tread had been stripped open! I'm afraid to drive my car now. Is this a camber issue? How many miles do you think I have left before the tire bursts? What are some *good* yet cheap replacement tires for them? Kumho? My wheels are 17x9.5. I'm thinking +265mm tires. Is this the optimal tire width for 9.5-inch wheels? Here's a picture of what it looks like now...

If it means anything, I can see two layers of steel braiding in this gash. :(

hello no i wouldnt ride on that, it looks about time for tires even if that wasnt there, no? that does not look safe at all, especially for your rims sake.

lex400sc, this is a rear, right?

You haven't had that setup long, was that tire in good shape when you put the Supra rims on?

I'm real interested - my Supra rims are waiting for Kumho's, I want to be sure I don't have any issues when I put 'em on in the spring -

have you had alignment work done since you got those rims & tires?

don't drive on that tire -

Good reason to get new tires.

I would suggest the AVS dB tires or the Yokohama ES100s

Both are priced well and a TON quieter than the ones you have now. I have the AVS dB on the Lex and installed the ES100s with my friend on his M3. Very nice. The ES100s come with a free RC car too!!

Just bought the AVS ES100s, $250. They should be here in two days. Hopefully my tires will hold up until then....

Strongsail, yes this is the right rear. When I bought the wheels, the two fronts had brand new tires and the two rears had about 5000 miles left on them. Hermosa was doing a few power-braking burn outs in my ride at the Norcal meet, and on one run he stripped a long chunk of the tire away. I still have the chunk. The rear tires were unevenly worn when I got them.

I know Kuhmo tires are reasonably price and the quality of them is good.

I just got my Yokohama tires delivered, mounted, and balanced today. When they took the stripped tires off the rim, there was literally less than 2mm of rubber holding the tire together. All the nylon and steel layers were torn open. The mechanic said I had about five miles left before it'd blow. Lucky me!

To Yokos are a LOT quieter than the Daytons when crossing turtles, railroad tracks, potholes, and deccelerating. They also grip a lot better then the Daytons. I was corning hard on a couple turns today just to break them in and man did they ever hold on to the road! The tread pattern also looks cooler as does the profile of the sidewall. I can't wait till my front tires need replacing :D.
