Braking is guesswork!
Hi. This is my first hybrid which I've had for a few months, but I have a problem with every time I brake it is a new experience....the regen and mechanical braking vary in how much each comes on (and off) as the car comes to a stop. I have to feather the braking pressure within a very short pedal travel and guess what is going to happen. There is no progressive braking and being quite dangerous in crowded traffic I leave a long space to the car in front. Is this standard? Can the regen be changed in the software settings so it only works at the top of pedal travel and the mechanical brakes do all the stopping....that would give a progressive and predictable braking outcome. Happy to hear if this is something that can be ironed out. Thanks Philip

Thank you for your reply.... 'Seamless' is how marketing describes the interaction between regen and mechanical braking. Has anyone had a similar braking issue or is knowledgeable about how to make the braking progressive rather than erratic? The reports about the problem mention the discomfort of passengers but it is a safety issue.....perhaps a simple fix in the braking/regen software settings? Thanks.
This is my first hybrid and I only notice a slightly different behavior only about 1% of the time. The other 99% is as if it wasn't a hybrid. Even if it was 50%, I bought a hybrid knowing that regeneration is part of the experience. Safety issue?...now that's a stretch!
Welcome to hybrids. You'll get used to it. Toyota has the best and brightest engineers working on making Hybrid braking smooth as possible. They've been working on it for decades. So whatever you have now is the best engineers can do w/ billions of dollars of research, development, and the worlds fastest supercomputers can muster. Nothing you can do in "software" or whatever you are thinking can or will change it.
Just enjoy =) Give it a couple months and you wont notice it.

Thanks for the encouragement. There are some things that overcome the erratic braking effort....I leave a longer space to the car in front, which is recommended in the owners manual. Toyota with their $$$billions have identified the varying braking effort to be dangerous. The other thing which I find really useful is to put the gearbox into +/- mode on long downhill runs and chpose a good braking gear. It also reduces the regen/manual braling cutting in and out so it is more comfortable and safe. Toyota have overdone the regen I guess in an effort to maximise the battery charge. This might be good design for the EV, but in the hybrid it is overkill, and gets awkward when the battery is full. The regen cuts out completely without warning, which is definitely unsafe coming to a stop after a long hill. Maybe a few hours work for their software people to fix.....?

Hi NX Owner, thanks for your note ... however, the UX I have doesn't have paddles, and it wouldn't fix the erratic braking problem that needs attention by Toyota. The 'one pedal' approach by other manufacturers is a more progressive method of using regen as braking without the lurching of their current UX setup.
