So I got a quote to powdercoat some wheels today. They told me 1500.

They said that since I want the lip and face painted (3 piece wheels), they would charge as if it were two sets of wheels.

Is this reasonable? If so, I think I'll just get the lips powder coated and save a few hundred bucks.

Wow that seems crazy expensive.

I had my 3-piece CCW Classics powdercoated in the following fashion and the cost was $800. The shop is a well known place that is on the pricier side because of their phenomenal work.

The wheels are not standard size so that added to the cost (18X10" wide front and 17X11.5" rear)

3-stage Black pearl center with gloss clear (premium powder that costs more than your standard one stage colors)
Clear powdercoat over mirror polished outer lips
Silver metallic with gloss clear rear barrels
All face hardware mirror polished.
Tires mounted and balanced (wheel weights look OEM with a nice gloss black finish, not cheap looking sht).

I guess it goes case by case. The faces on my wheels were shot peen flat black anodizing which took about an hour to media blast on each wheel so that added some labor time for sure.

I do want to note that I brought the wheels completely disassembled (hardware in a seperate box), brand new rear barrels all around, and the outer lips I mirror polished beforehand and were fully prepped (degreased with Prepsol etc.) ready to shoot powder.

With all this in mind, I still think $1,500 is pretty outrageous but you are in CA where everything seems to cost 2X as much as the rest of the country.

Yea it sounds rediculous to me as well. When they gave me the price I was thinking they thought I wanted a whole new set of wheels or something lol.

I called another place and they said $150 per wheel but they need to see them first to confirm.

What was the finish you're doing? Like 97-SC300 says, it usually helps cost when they're already disassembled.

Matte black center, gloss black lip. Nothing fancy. I got another quote today for $1k for everything and $600 for just the lips.

If they were smart, they would shoot Ink Black for everything and then shoot your centers with a matte clear over to save on cost but it is like doing "2 sets". They might be just over charging for labor work on disassembling and reassembling since most single stage powder coating like that usually costs like $300 - $350 for whole wheel including strip so you should be looking more like $600 to $700 for two tone with everything disassembled.
