Default quietest tire for 17 in

Aside from those extreme tread patterns and insane grip that some tires offer, what is the quietest tire out there that is available in 235/45-17 form? Any response is greatly appreciated.

Recco,

The Tires, Wheels and brakes forum is the appropirate spot for your question. I've moved the other two places you asked it here and merged the threads together.

Default Quiet Tires

The quietest in that size is the Turanza LS-Z, 2nd best is Yokohama AVS DB S2, then the Conti Extreme Contact.

I can tell you it's not my Toyo Proxes T1-S. That thing hums on normal city driving and gets worse on the highway. It grips like hell though!

Default Not the ES100

While the Yoko ES100 are good tires and have a good price/performance, they are NOT quiet.

I just put a set of the Yoko ES100 's on my GS and they are a lot quiter than my worn out Turanza LS-Z's. I bought the car with the Turanza's on it and they had 70-50 percent tread left. I asked the seller about the tire noise at that time and his response was that they were a lot quiter than the worn Dunlop SP5000's that he replaced. The Turanzas got loud enough that people walking in the neighborhood would turn around to see what was coming. I assumed they were hearing my tires, since I do not have an aftermarket exhaust. I have a feeling that all 17 inch tires are going to get louder as they wear. How many miles should I expect to get before the real tire noise starts to creep in on the ES100? By the way, I really like these tires so far, even after a 1900 mile road trip!!!! TIA

my es100's (tirerack replaced the avs db's due to noise) began getting loud at 5k. i think ive just accepted the fact that my gs400 is gonna have loud tires. i think im gonna try the turanza ls-z's next time.

You could also try the BFG g-Force KDWS, it's quiet, great traction (AA), and has long thread life also (400). We've about 7k miles on them (since August '02) and they are still running just as quiet as when new and we've never had a problem with these tires.
