Default Wheel/tire Shipping Question

hi there

i need to ship 4 16 inch wheels chrome factory lexus wtih 225/50/16s. i measured them today and they are 24 inch X 24 inch X 10 inch

this is inflated and they wiegh 42 lbs each

of course after i take the air out of the tires, they will weigh less

i need to get them from los angeles to chicago

whats the best way to ship them? best company? how much should i expect to pay? 7-10 day ground is fine, buyer is in no hurry.

i went to ups store today and they said it will be $48.96 per wheel/tire combo

i think thats a bit much, almost 200 for shipping..is that about right?

all help is appreciated, and if u got hookups/opinions i would love to hear it.

Try a freight company like Estes, or AAA Cooper. I've shipped complete motors before for about $90 from Georgia to Texas.

ryan, that sounds about right. i paid that much also to ship some 18's w/ tires. I've never called around to get other quotes, but it was a hassle. I just shipped it UPS and got it over with.

FedEx has a freight service you should look into

http://www.fedex.com/us/freightportal/?link=1

Also, some places like Office Depot don't add any fees/markup for UPS.

Also, no point letting air out of tires....air weighs 0. Plus it's good cushioning.

Ryan, like Dex said try taking the wheels to Office Depot. I've shipped mine from there and it was about $15 per wheel for UPS ground (short hop, not across the country though). Places like Mail Boxes etc will rip you off big time.... I know they were bought by UPS, but not sure if they've changed their pricing structure.

Wouldn't air that is compressed weigh more than air at zero PSI?

Correct, air has a mass. The more air molecules the more weight. This is the case with PSI, you basically cram air molecules into a given space to create a force, or PSI. Therefore more air molecules means more weight.

Try this, If you have a full air compressor, pick it up, then release all of the air and pick it up again. There is a substancial difference.
