Default Tires that don't rub me the wrong way

Hey guys I searched the forums diligently but I am getting mixed info. Please clarify for me:

I am shopping around for wheels & tires for my 95 sc400. I want to go 18x8.5 and 18x9.5 or 10. Tire size of 255/40/18 and 275(or285)/35/18. I've read where some people's rear wheel wells rub with this setup, yet others do not. That seems odd since we all have the same car. I am likely to drop the car 1". I don't want to have to bend or shave my wheel wells. What is the consensus? Will these fit ok?

Also, I'm content for now with the stock brakes. I love 5 spoke wheel designs (Racinghart M5, Azev Type A, Enkei RC5, Mille Miglia Avia II) but I understand how those might display my ugly brakes a little too much. What are some other good wheel choices in these wheel sizes that will look aggressive and classy yet not showcase the stock brakes so much?

Thank you guys! As always your advice is very much appreciated!

you're forgetting another dimension in wheels...offset. that's what makes the difference.

if you go 10" on the rears then you will need 45mm offset, some 275x17" tyres will rub the arches under flexing, you might get away with 285 on ultra low profile 18"s as there is less sidewall flex but it is very close.

Try to keep the fronts as close as possible to the factory 50mm offset, 45mm offset would be fine for 8.5" fronts, dont sacrifice wheel offset for brake clearance as it buggers up the steering.

We have just had reports that the Bridgstone S03 tyre (top of the range) does not suit the Soarer causing poor steering and excessive noise, bummer when you have just paid £500GBP for a set.
