Rim clear-coat damage & repair
Long story short: I damaged the clear coat on one of my Wed's rims with detailer's acid. I was detailiing the underbody of the car and accidentally got the acid on the driver's side rear rim. The acid removed a 1/2" x 4" strip of clear coat on the lip where it "puddled".
What is the process to re-clear the damaged lip? Can a body shop do this repair or should I send the rim off to a specialist?

Im not positive, but I dont think a body shop will clear it for you, or clear it properly. I would check with a wheel repair shop and go from there. Even they will probably send the lip out to someone to get re cleared, but at least you know who they use is used to clearing wheels specifically.

those "de-greaser" is very nasty and harsh to the clear-coated wheels, esp the good jdm ones..you need to take it to a good wheel repair shop..but from what i was told(by a nation-wide wheel repair shop mgr) and experience, not very many shop in the USA(if any at all) can match the original clear-coat finish quality from japan...

Thats probably true, I have seen a few Blitz Technospeeds with clearcoat re done, you could definitely tell the difference. Another thought might be to have the clear stripped and re polish the lip without the clear, just stay up on it. My HRE's dont have a clear coat on the lips, they actually recommended against it. The only issue with that it will that lip look different from the other three when they are all cleaned up.

Tom - real sorry to hear what happened. There's a place in Atlanta called WheelWizard. Check www.wheelwizard.com. Maybe worth calling them to see what they can do.
