Default Need help understanding offset

I am looking at some wheels for my Lexus 93 SC400. The wheels are 18" x 8" (Front) Offset 38 and 18" x 9" (Rear) Offset 45 with 5x114.3 bolt pattern, and tires are Dunlop Sport FM 901 245/40/18 (Front) and 265/35/18 (Rear)

I have a 93 SC400 and understand that the stock offset is 50mm+. I'm not sure what this means exactly but was told that if I got anything less then 50 that it would look funny.
