Tire size and effect on ride...

I know I'm a little ahead of the spring/summer season, but am thinking about getting larger than stock rims and tires soon. However, I LOVE the luxurious ride of my stocks. Can anyone who's upgraded tell me how much firmer the ride becomes, in order to gain the handling of lower profile tires!? Also, what's the best size you'd recommend for a '97-plus ES?
