Wheel damage and low profile tires
Damaged one of my 19” Altstadts last weekend. Wasn’t a real big dent, car seemed to drive ok and didn’t seem to be losing air. Because of business commitments, I just got to take the wheel to a wheel repair company yesterday. They were highly recommended by individuals that I trust from Sewell Lexus and Davenport Motors.
First item of interest: They charge a flat rate for wheel repair. They get $125 per wheel, “regardless of damage”. I don’t know whether other repair firms work that way, but
Wheel Technologies in Carrollton (suburb of Dallas) does. The repair was perfect – can’t tell where the lip was dented. They’re equipped to do damn near anything – even powder coat and chrome plate, all onsite. That seems pricey for a minor dent?
Second item: The tire was actually losing air and went flat last Monday sometime before I went to lunch. It “looked” ok when I parked at my office that morning. I drove on it not more than a long block where I could pull into a parking area and air it up. Everything seemed ok. Well, it wasn’t … the short distance that I drove on it while flat damaged the tire and requires replacement ($242 at Tirerack).
The point being: LOW PROFILE TIRES DON’T REACT WELL TO BEING DRIVEN WHILE FLAT. Be forewarned guys, the low profile tires damage easily when run flat – a lot more so than a 50 or 60 series tire.

sorry to hear that...
well to add/answer your inquiry...
1. yes, most wheel repair shop, esp national chain facilities, charge flat fee most of time. ~$100(with coupon) to ~$125...on curb rash, they charge the same fee...here in LA, we do have some mom-and -pop shops chagre about 1/2 to 2/3s..some cl guys used them before...
2. on lower profile, esp 18s and larger, i make the habit of checking the tyre pressure every 7-10 days..

Garnet,
That looks like a big damage. Good to know you've got it taken care of. $125 is very reasonable. I paid $110 just to polish my outer rim.
I got a flat tire the other day and drove back home for 2 miles. The tire with only 1000 miles was totally trashed. I just had to pay for a new one. Good thing was my buddy at Discount Tires prorated my bad tire and I only paid $110 for a brand new 20"

you guys should also check the sidewalls. I had a major bubble around the entire inside sidewall on one of the tires. I went to get my tires flipped inside out due to camber and they showed me.
