Default What's Your Spare?

For those of you with front big brake upgrades (Supra TT, Brembo, AP Racing, Endless, etc.), what do you use as a spare wheel/tire combo? Right now I've got my stock 16" spare in my trunk, which is pretty much useless for the fronts, but usable for the rears at least. I'm trying to find one that I can use front and back. I really don't want to deal with tow trucks/flat beds (knock on wood).

Will the stock GS 17" fit? Or will I have to use a spacer (which I really really do not want to do). Or has anyone know of an inexpensive 1 piece aftermarket wheel that has enough caliper clearance? Maybe one that's a split-five spoke? Any recommendations?

Thanks.

I verified the stock 17" will not fit on my Supra brakes. Your best bet is to get a stock front wheel off of a Supra TT or any aftermarket wheel that offers an application for a Supra TT.

I sold all of my stock 17" GS wheels and bought four stock SupraTT wheels(Silver). They measure 17x8", 17x9.5". I carry one of the fronts as a spare.(235/45/17)
That way, with the SupraTT calipers, it wont matter if you have a flat in front or back.......dont forget to carry 5 SupraTT lug nuts though..... Tiny

Default This is an important subject!

Don’t have big brakes yet, so doesn’t affect me (yet) but now that the subject’s come up, I’m amazed that I haven’t seen it here before. Did I just miss it? Could’ve easily happened – not reading all posts, only those with subject that catches my eye. This seems a pretty important subject for those with brakes and aftermarket wheels – probably a significant percentage of CL’ers. And, as you’d expect, Tiny’s already got it covered.

Manny, does that mean you don't carry a spare at all? Frankly, I've toyed with the idea myself, to save that 50-60lbs (at least, in the city.)

Wouldn’t that be an OHHH ***** when trying to mount a spare that God himself couldn’t make fit.

[Maybe you just ran over one of those pesky spike strips while delivering meals down in the projects (don’t worry, that group of guys coming towards you will surely help.)]

Default I posted it almost exactly one month ago.

Titled:
Does the spare tire fit if you have Supra TT / RMM Big Brakes ? ? ?

Yes you're right; this is pretty important.

I'm buying the spacesaver spare tire and wheel from a Supra TT.

If you want a standard Supra front wheel or a spare, check out Supraforums.com.
That's where I found my spare.

Garnet, yeah, those damn spike strips always screwin' up my program! I still have my spare in there just in case of my rear wheels goes out...but I have been seriously considering having HRE make me a one-off 18" with the right clearance...

I want to see how much clearance I have in my spare wheel well...maybe I can fit a 20 in there...

I thought of this, too... the 19" HRE 546R should look great, but the Supra brakes will surely leave me stranded if I get a flat on my daily 100 mile commute.

I found a couple of wheel centers lying around that are 18" 5x114.3. I'm going to measure the pad heights and see if they'll clear the Supra brakes: then I'll just stick one together with a couple of lightly used rim parts- I'm thinking 18x8.5 for a 245/40zr18 should do the trick.

Presto! A beautiful HRE spare wheel!

Anh,
the factory 17@ will not fit.

I just got a Supra TT spare. Either that or a stock Supra TT front wheel will work.

Manaray: 543R... nice choice... I'll see if I can throw a spare together for you if you want- looks like the 18" parts I have are 540 (mesh) and 547 (split 5-spoke) styles. I'll need to check to be sure the pad height will clear your 6-piston brakes.

Actually, we're running the first prototype 20" 'R' parts today. So far, we've cut a 547R 20"- looks HUGE, but we are making a few changes to make the wheel more attractive.

Like Manaray, I have the AP brakes up front. Unlike him, I don't have all his $$, so a spare HRE is out.

The SupraTT wheels and spare mentioned by RMMGS4 don't fit over the APs.

The cheapest route I found was to order a close-out wheel directly from OZ. I bought a Sinfonia, 18x8 w/35mm offset, part number SF880BFX, for $159. OZ phone ordering is 305.471.0042. Then I ordered a Kuhmo tire from Tire Rack. The grand total will set you back around $300. This all fits in the trunk spare location nicely; any wider wheel and the trunk mat/cover would not sit flat.
