Default braking distance and wieght noticable with 20inch wheels?

is the braking distance and wieght of 20 inch wheels very noticable from 18inch?? I was considering 20, but like 18 for high performance and 19's are hard to come by sometimes.

More than weight, simple diameter determines the braking/acceleration. (I could get into the physics of why if anyone is that interested)

As most of you know, the further away from the center the weight is, the more torque it takes to turn the wheel. (Torque=acceleration*mass*distance) What I find funny is that people spend countless hours anguishing for wheels that weigh 25 lbs instead of 28 lbs, but they'll buy a tire that weighs 4 lbs more! For instance, 25 lbs wheel+26 lbs tire vs 28 lbs tire + 24 lbs tire. 31 vs 32 lbs, the 25 lbs wheel set up is the better performer, right? Wrong

The 28/24 combination is actually a better performer because of our friend torque, and the KEY componet of distance.

Thumbs up

Right on!

So do you have weights for any of the popular tires around here?

Michelin Pilot Sport
Bridgestone S03 Pole Position
Toyo T1S
Yokohama AVS Sport
etc....

There are so many different sizes, we might be here all night. I am working on putting together a table now. Hopefully soon.

And as you might guess, as a general rule of thumb, the cheaper the tire, the heavier it is.

A big brake kit will fix the problem (at least it did for me! My car stops quicker than it did when it was stock...easily...ask DaveGS400 or DevilDog...)

ok then, brakes, what types of upgrades am i looking at? what's this factor going to cost me?

Throw me some ideas to start looking at.

I checked my brakes, i'm shocked that the GS has only a 2 piston caliper. The brakes are pretty good already. I seen some 6 piston setups but they are way out of the league i'm looking at. 5k for brakes. anything around 1k?

I've heard of the supra upgrade kit, and many 4 piston setups.got any info to send me? shoot! websites? prices?

Thanks CL!

For an inexpensive brake upgrade, the Supra TT brake kit is bang for the buck...Steve Ganz has it for like $700 or so...That with some steel braided lines should make quite a difference....

Also, most big brake kits are in the $2000-$4000 price range...for me, it was worth it (especially consider what I paid for my setup...don't ask, I can't say...)...anyways with my AP racing setup (6-piston, 13.5" rotor) I have some crazy braking action...nearly everyone who has driven my car ends up stopping 2-4 cars shy of the stop line...I have to "underbrake"...

Of course, then again, I don't have 46 pound wheels with a 28 pound tire...

Dennis - Do you know how much the Nitto NT-555 weigh? (245/35-20 and 275/30-20) Also, great info you post! Thanks!

I'm going to weigh my next set of wheels/tires before I get them put on (HRE 543R 20" and Bridgestone S-03)

Manaray, What wheels do you have now and what size?

I don't care much for HRE. I like the deep dish look. I want something light.

I'm thinking about 18in blitz 03 wheels for my gs4, I'm going to look into that supra brake setup too. I'm still researching a nice suspension setup. I think coil over is going to be the way to go. I'm not sure how easy it is to install, set up and adjust yet.

Anyone know what blitz 03 wheels weigh? 18x9

I think you're a little confused then... HRE now offers straight lip, deep dish designs. In fact I have a set sitting in my office. The 19x9.5 weighs a mere 23 lbs!

Coilovers take the same amount of work to install as springs. (can be less work actually, depending on if you need compressors for the springs/stock shock) To be properly done, they should be corner weighted so the ride height is changed to the desired balance, but this is not needed for a street car. I recommend (and sell) the Tein system which I use on my personal cars.

The 18x9 03 is 26 lbs.

and Manaray, I'm working on those tire weights.
