Default 1997 LS400 fitment/spacer/clearance question

I have a '97 LS400 and I'm looking to put a set of 18s" on it.

The problem is, as many LS owners know, the front calipers are immense, requiring spacers or bigger wheels to fit correctly.

My question is: as long as the lug pattern of the wheel is the same, will any 5x114.3 wheel work so long as the proper spacers are installed?

I was looking at a set of Privat Netz 40 FRS, and discounttiredirect.com indicates they will fit. But others on CL have indicated they will NOT clear, at least not without spacers. I don't want to go any bigger than 18". I was told by a local tire shop to be weary of buying wheels online because they cannot be returned once fitted.

Any help/suggestions?
