Default Tire Manufactured Date

Someone just sent me this info, is it accurate?

"There is a code on the sidewall of your tires that tells you when the tire was manufactured. Old tires that sit around before they are sold can be dangerous, the tread can come off while you are driving. The tires are sold as new even though they may be years old. The code is the last numbers after a string of them close to the rim, something like 4305, which means the 43rd week of 2005."

I checked the snow tires I just got from Tirerack and if I'm looking at the correct numbers, they are 1708 and 1808-so very new.

Tire dating has been around for a couple of decades, maybe 30 years. Nothing new.

Yup, I believe it was reported by John Stossel (?) from 20/20.

Here's the link to the video: http://abcnews.go.com/Video/playerIndex?id=4825864

Definitly a great job posting this info because like me there are not many people that know this kind of info. I will be checking my runflats tomorrow morning and also the new tires being put on my car in a couple days.
Thank You and a big from me, Cliff

Tire rubber usually won't get "dangerously old " til it is at least 5 years old depending on how they are stored. More likely if you bought a tire a year after it was made the tread might be a little harder than when it was first made and wear slower giving you extra tread life.
