Default Bent wheels

Prior to purchasing my current set of wheels, I had a set of Milli Miglias installed on my SC430. My left front and back rims got bent because I hit a pothole in the road. Is this a common occurance? In all the years I owned other cars, I never had a bent rim, potholes notwithstanding. This set I owned for about 8 months and here I am. Did the runflats contribute to this?

I do not think it is the runflats. The side walls on runflats are thicker than regular tires.

I am assuming you are running either 18" or larger rims. If so your chance of getting bent rim increases. I had 3-piece 17" rims (Stern Wheels) on my SC400 they were easy to bend. I replaced them with a 1-piece 17" (Fittipadi) solid cast rims and did not have the problem. The Fittipadi were strong but were also heavy.

I suggest putting more air pressure in your tires. Lexus recommends 33 psi but I feel that is still too low for low profile tires. I run 36 psi on my current 18" Lowenharts. I had hit several pot holes and haven't have any damages yet.

It also could be that the aluminum alloy material used on the Milli Miglias rims are a bit soft or thin. Suggest getting forged or higher grade rims if you are thinking of replacing them.

Like I've always said, you can bend ANY wheel...even stock ones. It just depends on your luck....you might also want to look into a 1-piece FORGED wheel or a 2-piece completely forged wheel (meaning the lip is also forged)...both of those will strong that any other type of wheel...

Also, like Chu said, air pressure can help...I have mine set anywhere from 38-40 PSI (on a 20" tire)...oh, I also don't think it was the run-flats...

Default Thanks for the info

I replaced the Millis with SSR Vienna Courage wheels. It is a 3 piece forged wheel that they said should be less likely to bend. The shop that installed it also told me to maintain the pressure at 40 psi. Both of you confirmed what I was told. Thanks for the info!
