Default tire rack suggestion for stock 17s

Im looking to upgrade the tires on my gs400. I want to keep the front 235/45/17. I have the stock 5 spoke 17's. Tire rack suggest to go with a 265/40/17 for the rear. Just wondering why it jumps from a 45 series tire to a 40 series with wider tires in the rear. Will 265s fits on stock 17s?

why do u want to 'upgrade' your tires?
if you look up gs400 in tire rack, it should give you the 235/45-17 specs.

It also gives you optional sizes which is the 235/45/17 front and 265/40/17 rear and a few more options. I need new tires why else would you buy new tires.

well, the reason they go from 45 to 40 is to compensate for the extra width, which also increase sidewall height. the "series" is actually a percentage of width. so actual sidewall height on a stock tire is 45% of 235mm. so if you go to a 265 wide rear, you'll need to decrease teh percentage to make sure the overall diamter stays close to stock. so... 265mm x40% would be very close to 235x 45%.

Usually one would only do that if he or she changed the wheels to staggered sizes. I would probably just stay with the stock size unless you are changing the wheels also.

you stated you're looking to 'upgrade' tires, kind of vague in exactly what u want to do; whether get better brand or change tire sizes (which evidently tire rack site suggested). play nice as we're all here to help. i would suggest, as Brandon has considerately done, to retain the fronts/rears the same at 235/45-17's, since you're not staggered. i too am looking for new tires for the same wheel as well and am retaining the 235/45 all around.

GL to you
