16 x 8 +50 sounds like an OEM wheel. The tire you mentioned above is too wide and if you were to mount it on that wheel it would bubble out on the sides. You're better off going with a 215 or a 225 .

On my brother's first-gen, I temporarily installed my stock 17x8 +50 GS 400 wheels with 235/45-17 tires. The wheels had the old-school clip-on weights on the inside of the wheel lip. The weights hung over the run enough to contact the suspension upright, causing a "knock-knock-knock" noise from the front of the car. As a temporary fix, I removed the wheel weights.
I think if you go larger than 235/45-17 on that 16x8 +50 you may actually have an issue with the tire hitting the front suspension, due to the way the sidewalls 'bulge' over the rim. A scary prospect. Lower offset wheels would look much better on the first-gen. 8" +50 looks absolutely LOST on the car.
