Default Tire size discrepencies?

I recently bought a winter rim and tire setup, and while shopping noticed a bit of peculiarity in recommended tire sizes.

From what I've read on CL and the Tire Rack website, recommended tire sizes are 235/45/17, 225/55/16 and optional for winter tires are 215/60/16. This last tire size doesn't make sense to me. Going from the 235s, the 215/60s have a greater circumference of 2.6". However, 215/55s have a smaller circumference from the 235s by just 0.1".

I know it's not a big deal either way, but this is a curiousity. Could the reasoning be because of softer sidewalls in winter tires that would shorten the gap?

This partly convinced me to go with 225s.

might be better winter tire options in that size and a taller/skinnier tire cuts through snow and slush better.

FYI - The OEM 16s also came with 215/60 as one of the sizes.

I believe that's for the 300 only, but yes.

That is true. If we are talking about wheel diameters for a 2GS 300 vs 400/430, though, it really does not matter.
