Default suggestions on how to ship wheels

i assume this would be the best place to put a thread about shipping wheels. anyway, i'm trying to ship one 19" wheel to maryland, and was wondering what you guys use, or plan on using, to ship your wheels that you sell. i would imagine you have to wrap it up in something?

I've used UPS to ship wheel back east with no problems. You can pack them yourself or they can even pack the rim for you for a small fee. Depending on where your shipping the cost can run from $25 up to $40 or so dollars. And that is for UPS ground. You could also try DHL. I've never shipped with them in the US, but I've used them internationally and they are reasonable.

you can take your wheels to UPS Store and they can pack and ship the wheels.

If you are looking to save money, get a box from a wheel / tire shop (they are usually glad to get rid of them). FedEx Ground / Home Delivery with a drop off at Kinko's is the cheapest shipping option.

For wheels with tires:
Cut out a single sheet of corrugated cardboard for the back of the wheel/tire, using the circumference of the tire as a guide. Then cut two more like it and put a double thickness of the cardboard over the front face of the wheel/tire. Then wrap the whole thing with packing tape by wrapping around the tire and cardboard until it's all secure (prob 10-12 wraps of tape). Then take to FedEx Ground - they have the absolute cheapest shipping rate for these things, cheaper than UPS, DHL, etc.

For wheels only:
Your best bet is to use a box instead, since there is no tire to protect the wheel.

foam pipe insulation works well for protecting the lips of the rims too.

also remember to insure each box for the full value of the set since it's often tough to replace just one wheel in case one box goes missing. that way if the worst happens it's easy to work out between you and the buyer.
