Are tire shine products actually bad for your tires?

I was reading that the chemicals used actaully soften the side and make it easier for the tire to go out..

I havent heard anything about the tire shine being bad for the tires, but driving with the negative camber that the car in your avatar has would be horrible for the tires

I agree. Just don't put the stuff on with a paint sprayer.

The only thing bad about it is if you put too much it gets on the side of your car when you drive.

And if you're also picky, excessive tire shine can also get on the plastic shield under the wheel well

but seriously i have never read anything bad about that, i actually remember a shop telling me once and i do it once in a while now that you should put soem tire shine on the inside sidewall once in a while ti keep it moist cuz if it drys up it could cuz cracking faster plus if you ever flip the tires the inside would be so old looking that when you try tireshine it won't stick or look right. i knew he was telling the truth cuz this happen to me with my honda years back. and when i flipped them to the other side i would put tire shine on the sidewall and it wouldn't stick and looked ugly...

Someone on tirerack on another forum was saying that all those tire shine products are in a way bad for the rubber in the long run, but the time it takes to degrade the rubber in most cases are much longer than the tire life itself, so it really doesn't matter too much. I guess if you store a classic car you might not want to put anything on the tires, but otherwise for street driven cars where tires last 2-5 years it shouldn't be a problem at all. With that said, I really don't know if that is true or not, but I've been using tire dressing products on my tires since I could drive back in the late 80s and haven't noticed anything go wrong with any of my many sets of tires I've gone through.

almost make sure you don't put tire shine along the tread pattern of the tire for OBVIOUS reasons. well, still remember the is300 story from long long time ago?

I thought I read somewhere a long time ago that some of the tire shines have a lot of alcohol in them and that can dry out the rubber. I think Armorall was a culprit. One of the ways you could tell was that it turned a dry brown color after a few days and lost its black shine. I dunno, might be smoke and mirrors.

I did notice the brown fade with Armorall and havent used it for a long time.
