What profile tire for 17" rims on first gen GS?

What profile tire for 17" rims on first gen GS?
I got a set or 17" rims with tires that were 215/40/17..boy those did not last very long at all, they overheated and popped on me after 2 weeks. Plus it make the car look like it had TINY training wheels.
I am looking for new tires to get for the rims. I was thinking 225/45/17 all around, someone here is selling a set of 4 235/45/17..will those work or be too wide? Again this is on a 1995 GS300.
