Default Sir Brandon!

Heads up.

I sent you a message for a tire recommendation on 12/21 (LX-470) but have not heard from you.

Probably, this happened because I did not draw attention in the subject line for the need of your expert advice.

Hope this helps.

Happy New Year!

Default Inbox full

I think my Inbox was full, seems like you can only get like 20 PM's then you have to delete. You can always call or email me, thats probably better then using PM. Just try again if you want I cleaned out my inbox.

Default duh Question

(Actual question was posted earlier and not reposted to avoid waste of space on forum).

That said. I am so glad you asked.

My 2001 LX is still on the OEM tires and they have been great. Are there better tires out there?

The LX is my lux truck and as such is not expected to drive to the city every day. It is used for towing heavy trailers (5000+ lbs), hauling 7 people around as needed, hauling gear around, and I do off-road.

The off-roading is mostly on abandoned logging roads. This means I face mud of around 8 inches, stream crossing, and some scambling on loose rocks. The vehicle is also my choice for New England trips in winter (like this coming Saturday into central New Hampshire). If stuck, I use an ARB winch to pull out.

I live in N VA so we have snow here but not too much. If it gets deep enough so the cars have a problem, I usually vol. to drive the docs/nurses and police/firefolk.

So far the O***s have been up to the task, even if not aired down much. Also, they have been great at high speed (80+). Ahem, not that I would ever drive at those speeds, you understand.

OEMs also have been quiet and high milage.

So I love the OEMs but can be seduced by something with better abilities.

Sorry this is so long, but I do a lot with my truck and love every minute of it.

thanks

trav,

What is the exact size tire your LX needs? & what is the current tire (make & model) on your SUV?

Default Tires

I assume you have the OE 275/70 16 and probably have the LTX MS or Dueler HT OE tires. I would think you would want something more aggressive, based on what you said about your usage of the truck. I recommend the Bridgestone A/T Revo.

Default Brandon --- Thanks

Just got back this morning from New Hampshire/Vermont. 1,336 miles in four days to deliver family to Dartmouth plus a run to LL Bean for 2:30 AM shopping.

Big ice storm and the aging O***s loved it.

Thanks for the recommendation; I agree that your suggestions are the tires of choice.

However, some are telling me (and these are trusted and knowledgable tire friends in the business) that the Michelins will be better. I don't have any answer as to why.

Perhaps they do not believe I use the 470 as I do.

Or do the recommended tires have some weak points? Noise? Crappy ride at speed?

You are correct in saying I should use a more aggressive thread. I DO NOT want to get stuck when fording a stream in red clay mud.

Thanks

Trav

Well the Michelin LTX MS are an "oldie but a goodie" but they are not really designed for off road use. In addition to this, your snow and ice traction will improve with a more aggressive tread pattern.

I agree.

Which more aggressive pattern would you suggest and what downsides do they have?
