Interpreting TR review #'s
I've been pouring over the various numbers associated with the reviews and am not sure how to interpret them at times. Let us say an all season tire and ultra high perf summer is rated 8.5 across the board. In particular I'm concerned with ride comfort, noise comfort and tread wear. Would you interpret these numbers to be similar...for example:
Would an ultra high perf summer tire have a similar noise level as an Ultra High AS tire if both were given an 8.5?
Thanks

Well everybody is different on the different levels of performance & noise they like or can tolerate. If long tread life & a quiet tire is your choice, I suggest going with either an ultra high performance all season or high performance all season tire. If you want maximum grip & are not concerned too much about a slightly more noisy tire...go with the summer UHP type.......the tread will generally wear out faster on this type of tire generally but it's more aggressive. Every type of tire has it's pro's & con's so one will have to sacrifice something to get the benefit of something else. It all depends what is most important to you.

As I suspected. The tire I have in mind has been rated a 7, the Michelin MXV4 on the car now has been rated a 7.7. I pondered whether I would notice this real world. I do realize that each application will have it's characteristics so I can only cross my finegrs and see what it does on the car.
We'll see.

I had the MXV4 on my ES & switched to the Toyo Proxes TPT as it is a MUCH better tire, especially in heavy rain & snow. Excellent ride & handling to boot! Quite a bit cheaper than the Michelin, better tire with the same treadwear, traction & temperature ratings. The Toyo's are not offered on tirerack & neither is a very good tire (even higher rated than the Toyo) which is the Falken Ziex ZE-512. The Michelin is at best an average performing all season tire.....but a few better choices are out there for less money & overall better value!

Nothing wrong with summer rubber......just be prepared that for the most part, they will need to be replaced sooner & more often than a premium high performance all season tire. Keep us posted.
