Default Brake Caliper question

I've been prepping my 1999 SC3 calipers for install, and i have a few questions. Been trying to make sure the calipers are not sticking. Piston was pushed back in fairly easliy and sliding pins move freely enough. BUT... should they be automatically returning to original psoition by themselves? I pull the caliper out, sliding on the pins... The front calipers retract back on their own, the rears not so much. Also... how the hell do you install those retainer springs? Seems nigh impossible. And without them, I can't see how the pads won't rub on the rotors. Anyway... help a guy out.
