Brake painting-any tips?
I just bought a Spectre blue 2000 GS400 with 47k miles on it. The car is bone stock but I will be putting rims on in a few weeks and I'd like to have my brakes looking right first.
Has anyone here painted the brakes on their car themselves? is engine paint OK or do you have to go powder coated to get that shiny Brembo look?
Considering how messy a job this can be I'd love to just pay $200 or so to have it done but I'm not sure I trust a body shop to reassemble my braking system to the correct torque specifications etc (I realize it's not rocket science, I've just had bad experiences with paint guys who think they are qualified mechanics too). My car needs brakes now, so I'm considering getting them painted first then taking it straight to the shop to have the brakes done, that way I know it'll be put back together correctly.

If you do a quick search, there is plenty of discussions on this procedure.
If you don't want all the trouble of taking things apart, you can paint the calipers while they are still on. The back side is not really visible anyway. You can use engine paint. There is the 500 degrees version and a 1200 degrees version. The colors usually come in flat or gloss. You can also spray layers of clear on top. There is also a system (G2) where it is a brush on. This is a little more expensive but you don't get overspray.
It really depends how far you want to take it. You can paint, put caliper stickers on, then clear it. You can even machine down the front to smooth it out for a different look.
