Default Free way to watch DVD's on Win 10 PC

Tried playing a DVD on my Win 10 PC so I can watch Christmas movies on one machine while I research and nothing happened, researched and saw where the SOB's took the DVD playback feature away from Win 10 and now Microsoft wants to charge to be able to watch them.

Are there any free software downloads to be able to watch a DVD on a Windows 10 PC. I tried Media Player Classic Home Cinema and it does nothing, won't recognize or access the DVD in my PC.

VLC plays almost everything, including DVDs.

You can also customize the interface. I customized the interface to add step forward and backward buttons to the playbar.

I tried VLC and another media player. They don't work, VLC gives a error when I do the DVD/disc play option, does not even seem to recognize there is a DVD in there or offer a option of accessing the drive. It is "Home Alone", nothing new and my XP computer with the old dim monitor screen plays it and recognizes it just fine so it is not some kind of protection.

"Your input can't be opened:

VLC is unable to open the MRL 'dvd:///C:/Program%20Files%20%28x86%29/VideoLAN/VLC/'. Check the log for details."

This is the message I get when I put a DVD in and hit open disc from VLC. There just seems to be no recognition of a DVD when I put it in the drive anywhere.

just tried vlc on one of my win10 pc's - put in a dvd, it prompted how do i want to open it, i said vlc, and it worked fine. perhaps you need to uninstall/reinstall vlc.

mine shows it's playing dvd:///D:/

your url shows vlc is trying to play, uh, vlc, which doesn't make sense.

i'm running version 2.2.6.

from the windows explorer, i can right click the dvd and menu has 'play with vlc media player" and that works too.

I got it working, had nothing to do with VLC player, the computer needed updates/fixes to drivers/Win 10 and some other things despite being less then a year old and had trouble updating to the latest Win 10, many are having the same problem, had to restart it several times and download programs to get it to update properly. Every computer before this one I could just pop a DVD in and it played just fine, gotta love "progress" with new operating systems/computers.

windows 10 seems to have had a flood of giant updates recently and without rebooting they don't complete installing and other things may not work as you've discovered.
a lot of this has to do with security and not 'progress' ... the hackers are on fire working to steal everything from you, so updates are necessary and often.
