Default iPhone 8, X and beyond

nice discussion of rumors for iPhone 8....

http://www.macrumors.com/roundup/iphone-8/

AT A GLANCE

  • Apple has a major iPhone redesign planned for 2017, with a glass body and edge-to-edge OLED display that includes an integrated Touch ID fingerprint sensor and front-facing camera. The new iPhone may be sold alongside upgraded (but standard) 4.7 and 5.5-inch iPhones.

EXPECTED FEATURES

  • OLED display
  • Faster A11 processor
  • Glass body
  • Edge-to-edge display
  • Camera and Touch ID integrated in display
  • No Home button
  • Wireless charging
  • Three models - One OLED, two standard

2017 will mark the 10th anniversary of the iPhone and Apple has something major planned to celebrate the occasion. We're more than a year away from the launch of the iPhone 8, but because of Apple's ambitious plans for the device, there are already an abundance of rumors hinting at the impressive features coming in the 2017 iPhone.

Rumors suggest it's going to be a radical redesign, with an edge-to-edge display that does away with the top and bottom bezels where features like the Touch ID fingerprint sensor and the front-facing camera are housed. Instead, Touch ID and the camera may be built directly into the display, meaning there will be no Home button. Jony Ive has wanted to introduce an iPhone thatlooks like a single sheet of glass for several years, and 2017 may be the year that it's possible.

With that design, the display would take up the entire front of the iPhone, but it isn't clear if the display will grow to fit the iPhone or the iPhone will be shrunken down to fit the display (rumors suggest Apple will use a 5.5-inch or larger display). The display itself is said to be flexible OLED rather than an LCD, allowing Apple to introduce a thinner device that consumes less power and offers a better display with higher contrast ratio and more true to life colors. It may also feature edges that are somewhat curved on both sides, but rumors are unclear on this point.

As for the body, rumors suggest Apple is finally going to move away from the aluminum used in the iPhone 5, 5s, 6, 6s, and SE, instead re-adopting a glass body that's similar to the body that was used in the iPhone 4. At least one iPhone model coming in 2017 will use a glass body, according to Apple supplier Catcher Technology, and according to analyst Ming-Chi Kuo, the glass will be built around an aluminum or stainless steel frame.

nside, the iPhone 8 is expected to have a 10-nanometer A11 chip that will be both faster and more efficient, plus rumors suggest it could also include features like long-range wireless charging and biometric additions like iris or facial scanning.

Apple is said to be planning to position the dual-curve OLED iPhone 8 as a "Premium" model that will perhaps be sold alongside standard flat display 4.7 and 5.5-inch iPhone 8 models.

The iPhone 8 is still under development and will likely launch in the fall of 2017, and in the months ahead of its launch, we'll undoubtedly learn more about the specs of the device. In 2016, Apple is expected torelease the iPhone 7, a device with more modest design changes.

I find it funny that the new one just came out and people are already talking about the next version... year after year. The iPhone 7 should have been the radical redesign. It is more like iPhone 6 2.0.

It makes sense for them to hold off on the major redesign for the 8 considering next year will be the iPhone's 10 year anniversary.

Agreed! looks 99% like a 6 or 6S, so it shoulda been named "iPhone 6SS or 6S Pro"

Simply put, they weren't ready to produce all those cool, albeit rumored, features. As a die-hard apple fan, even I can admit that the 7 was a half assed phone, but I would rather them do it this way then to release the features when they weren't ready for prime time.

I concur. The iPhone 7 was a mere incremental upgrade from the 6S. But coming from a 6, it's blazingly fast to me. And the new bokeh effect on the 7 Plus is fun to mess around with. Who knew a half deflated balloon could look so elegant lol.

you don't hold off innovation for some arbitrary nostalgic anniversary, but apple, and indeed all tech companies, have plans and product roadmaps, and not every release can be a 'big' one.

Apple insider delivers the worst possible news about the iPhone 8

The iPhone 8 might be unveiled in September alongside the more “boring” iPhone 7s series, but the flagship model will see a limited September release, because Apple is facing various manufacturing issues. We already knew the iPhone 8 will face delays, as multiple reports detailed some of Apple’s component-related problems. But a new report from the most reputable Apple insider in the world indicates things may be even worse than we thought.

KGI Securities analyst Ming-Chi Kuo, a steady source of accurate Apple reports, said in a note seen by 9to5Mac that the iPhone 8 will be delayed by one to two months. iPhone 8 mass production will be pushed back to October/November rather than the expected August/September timeframe. As a result, Apple’s bottom line will take a serious hit, as buyers are expected to wait for the iPhone 8 rather than upgrade to the iPhone 7s.

Kuo says the iPhone 8 features “significant hardware upgrades” that are responsible for the production delays, including the custom OLED display, the A11 10nm chip, the new 3D Touch module and the 3D sensing cameras. The analyst says that Apple has custom-ordered several “major cutting-edge components,” which might explain the manufacturing delays.

He also says that the iPhone 8 will see shortage supplies “for a while” after launch. The report offered a more pessimistic outlook for the iPhone 7s as well, as the phone might not seem like a great alternative to all the full-screen smartphones launching from Samsung and other Android device makers this year.

KGI now expects Apple to sell 80-90 million iPhones in the second half of the year, down from the firm’s initial forecast of 110 million units.

meanwhile, touch ID may move to the back of the phone to the shock of iphone lovers....why not just make the apple logo the touch id sensor???????????????????????

Apple logo touch ID would be a great idea! My work 6s has horrible call quality, but they won't do anything about it because I'm out of warranty. I was thinking about waiting for the 7s or 8, but I may go for the S8+

vertical dual camera and a Touch ID fingerprint sensor built into the iPhone 8's casing are rumors that we've only heard once before, and Apple was rumored to be testing as many as 12 iPhone 8 prototypes, so it's possible this is not representative of the final design of the device. Most rumors suggest Apple is planning to put the Touch ID fingerprint sensor under the display of the device, but there have also been hints that Apple is struggling with that particular design, so it's also possible Apple was forced to relocate the Touch ID sensor to the rear of the iPhone 8.

nothing is final, they are working with a dozen prototypes right now.

a rear sensor will be the one reason I don't upgrade, as the case I use won't allow for it, I use a UAG Trooper and I keep my work RFID badge in it so all I have to do is touch the phone to the door plates at work, I don't have to fumble around to find the damn badge.

I've gone to great lengths to reduce my EDC and all keys from my life, I don't want to get weighed down with more crap in my pockets.
