My last 2 personal phones have had the sensor on the back and my work 6s has it on the front. Honestly, unless your phone spends a lot of time sitting on the desk, the sensor on the back is really a lot more convenient when the phone is coming out of your pocket.

all depends on the user.

sensor on the back:

not going to work with heavy duty cases with credit card pockets on the back.
can't use the sensor when the phone is docked in the car or on the desk.
limited to the fingers you can use based on how you have to grip the phone.

---

sensor on the front:

works with heavy duty cases with credit card pockets on the back
can unlock the phone when in a dock without having to pick up or grip phone.
can use any finger or thumb to access the phone right or left hand.

pulling it out your pocket might be easier, but it is only 1 of a dozen ways people carry, access, unlock, their phones.

---

it's all a matter of user preference. I prefer the sensor on the front..

Have you tried a rear facing sensor for an extended period of time? Tomorrow, just keep a tally of how you're picking up your phone and see how many variations you have in the way you grip it. If Apple moves it to the back, it's not the end of the world and after the first day, people will get over it (unless it's in a dumb place like right next to the camera in the S8...)

Love my nexus 6p's rear fingerprint sensor which now has a swipe down gesture available to show notifications.

cases would adapt and as for a credit card pocket, isn't that what apple pay is for?

yes I have, and it doesn't suit my needs for usage..

I dock my phone on a desk dock at work, can't get to the back sensor as it is resting against the dock
I dock my phone in my car, can't get to the sensor as it is resting against the dock.
I pick up my phone from the sides and my fingers can't even wrap around to reach the center where the sensor is indicated to be on my 7plus because of the heavy duty case I use.
I used a UAG Trooper case, in the back I keep my work RFID, and 3 other items, so if the sensor was there it would be covered anyway.

as I said, it all depends on the user, to each their own.

your current setup is pretty specialized and times change and you may have to adjust too...

as I said, to each their own.

I have no need to upgrade to an 8 or Anniversary Edition or whatever it is called. I just upgraded to a 7plus a few weeks ago, I'm good for 3-4 years. maybe longer.

If a good deal comes around for the 8 like did for the 7plus I might take it, otherwise I have no reason to change the way I do things just to keep up with the jones. I don't need the latest and greatest just to have it.

All that screen in the 7 body would be nice, although I'd still opt for the plus model. These mock ups must be rough because judging from those pics, they are chunkier than the current 7. I think the current thickness is great and don't really care to have it any thinner. Thinner phones (with large screens) tend to hurt a little more after prolonged use due to the sides digging into your hand.

thinner also tends to bend easier, and Apple has already had one bend-gate issue, doubt they want a repeat.

I'm definitely switching because of all the hardware upgrades from 6, which is what I have right now. I upgrade every other generation (discounting S models, I don't even consider upgrading to those).

So far what I like:

1. Upgraded cameras
2. OLED (finally)
3. More screen area (finally)
4. Wireless charging (finally)
5. Upcoming AR features (not fully confirmed in details)

Don't like:

1. Removal of the button (personal preference)
2. Air pods....(reason why I didn't bother with 7)
3. Fingerprint scanner (pending finalized production model)
4. Price tag (800-900 because of OLED? Seriously?)
5. No mention of Bluetooth 5.0 (dual source modes)

If they can't engineer Touch ID into the display, I'd much rather see it on the side or top or bottom.
