Default The Scotch/Bourbon/Whiskey thread.

I know a few people here are scotch and whiskey drinkers. Time for a thread about it. I could put "Official...and "Epic...." we'll see what kind of response we get here.

For a long time I was pretty much your usual Jack n Coke. Crown n Coke on special days. Then after working on a friends laptop. He gave me a bottle of Macallen 15 as payment. With explicit instructions that he would kill me if I poured coke in it.

"Whats this... old man scotch?"

So, I drank it like i should... 3/4ths of that bottle later. I'm sure you can imagine the condition I was in. I crashed out and went to bed.

Woke up with no hangover what so ever... Nothing... like I didn't drink a $70 bottle of scotch the night before. This is when I discovered two things. 1. Jack Daniels, Bourbons, and your run of the mill $30 bottles of mash-whatever, suck! 2. The single malt scotches could seriously turn me into an alcoholic quick.

So now I'm trying a new bottle every few weeks. I'm to the point where I double boil the distilled water for my special square silicone ice cube trays. So "The Rocks" are crystal clear and perfect.

I can now actually taste the differences in scotches. Lowlands, Speyside, Islay, when they use to all taste the same.

Right now I'm working on a bottle of The Glenlivet 12 at my Chicago-land work home.
Macallen 15 in the Milwaukee weekend house. The Glenlivet 12 will be my "table scotch". I think I will always keep a bottle in the bar. Its by far the best 12year old scotch for the money.

The Macallen 15 will be gone this weekend and I think I'm going to either try....

Lagavulin 16 (Islay)
or...
Dalmore 15 (Highland)

I keep reading about the Talisker 18... But me buying a $90-$100 bottle of scotch would justify a beating from the woman.

What has anyone else tried... how do you drink it?

All single malt scotches should be done neat. Don't bastardize the juice.
Whiskey stones to cool, but I do prefer the heat on my palate and throat.

Laphroaig. : If you're gonna do a single malt scotch, make sure it has a lot of peat. The Classic Scotch.

Macallan : A little sweeter, smoother, and more international. Dare I say cognac-like? The Modern Scotch.

Bourbon for mixed drinks, but nothing sweet like Coke or Red Bull. Let's be gentlemen, not drunken frat boys...

Woodford Reserve : For my Perfect Manhattan.

Booker's : Another good option. I use this for sweeter mixed drinks, like a mint julep.

I stick with the Irish for my whiskeys. Not very often, but I'll give it a shot once in a while. Taken neat. Jameson does the trick...

I'm a Macallan man myself. I have a bottle of the Lagavulin you're considering and its mighty fine when I'm feeling peat heavy

Not a scotch drinker, but my wife is a big fan. You listed one of her favorites in Lagavulin (she's got a bottle of that exact stuff you mention above ).

She has a couple sets of the scotch stones she uses sometimes (other times without)

Good to hear about the Lagavulin 16... I'm totally getting that then.

I have stones. I still like crunching cubes after the glass is empty.

She tends to like the slightly more smokey, peaty stuff (but not oppressively) so make sure you are OK with that Think it is a bit less peaty than Laphroig if you've had that.

Wanna tell you a story,
about the house-rent blues
I come home one Friday,
had to tell the landlady I'd done lost my job
She said that don't comfort me,
long as I get my money next Friday
Now next Friday come I didn't get the rent,
and out the door I went

So I goes to the landlady,
I said, "You let me slide?"
I'll have the rent for you tomorrow.
the next day I don't know
So said let me slide it on you know people,
I notice when I come home in the evening
She ain't got nothing nice to say to me,
but for five year she was so nice
Loh' she was lovy-dovy,
I come home one particular evening
The landlady said, "You got the rent money yet?",
I said, "No, can't find no job"
Therefore I ain't got no money to pay the rent
She said "I don't believe you're tryin' to find no job"
Said "I seen you today you was standin' on a corner,
leaning up against a post"
I said "But I'm tired, I've been walkin' all day"
She said "That don't confront me,
long as I get my money next Friday"
Now next Friday come I didn't have the rent,
and out the door I went

So I go down the streets,
down to my good friend's house
I said "Look man I'm outdoors you know,
can I stay with you maybe a couple days?"
He said "Uh, Let me go and ask my wife"
He come out of the house,
I could see in his face
I know that was no
He said "I don't know man, ah she kinda funny, you know"
I said "I know, everybody funny, now you funny too"
So I go back home
I tell the landlady I got a job, I'm gonna pay the rent
She said "Yeah?" I said "Oh yeah"
And then she was so nice,
loh' she was lovy-dovy
So I go in my room, pack up my things and I go,
I slip on out the back door and down the streets I go
She a-hollerin' about the front rent, she'll be lucky to get any back rent,
she ain't gonna get none of it
So I stop in the local bar you know people,
I go to the bar, I ring my coat, I call the bartender
Said "Look man, come down here", he got down there
So what you want?

One bourbon, one scotch, one beer
Well I ain't seen my baby since I don't know when,
I've been drinking bourbon, whiskey, scotch and gin
Gonna get high man I'm gonna get loose,
need me a triple shot of that juice
Gonna get drunk don't you have no fear
I want one bourbon, one scotch and one beer
One bourbon, one scotch, one beer

But I'm sitting now at the bar,
I'm getting drunk, I'm feelin' mellow
I'm drinkin' bourbon, I'm drinkin' scotch, I'm drinkin' beer
Looked down the bar, here come the bartender
I said "Look man, come down here"
So what you want?

One bourbon, one scotch, one beer
No I ain't seen my baby since the night before last,
gotta get a drink man I'm gonna get gassed
Gonna get high man I ain't had enough,
need me a triple shot of that stuff
Gonna get drunk won't you listen right here,
I want one bourbon, one shot and one beer
One bourbon, one scotch, one beer

Now by this time I'm plenty high,
you know when your mouth a-getting dry you're plenty high
Looked down the bar I say to my bartender
I said "Look man, come down here", he got down there
So what you want this time?
I said "Look man, a-what time is it?"
He said "The clock on the wall say three o'clock
Last call for alcohol, so what you need?"

One bourbon, one scotch, one beer
No I ain't seen my baby since a nigh' and a week,
gotta get drunk man so I can't even speak
Gonna get high man listen to me,
one drink ain't enough Jack you better make it three
I wanna get drunk I'm gonna make it real clear,
I want one bourbon, one scotch and one beer
One bourbon, one scotch, one beer

Funny you say that... went out looking for that scotch you recommended for my wife's bday in January and ended up with the Portwood 21 instead (didn't have the other one in stock). Had to go downstairs and see what she had in the closet

Excellent. I've lost the desire for these but the Mrs. will have them now and then. Balvenie generically across there offerings we've liked. 21 Yo Post Wood, 17 YO, single cask...our favorites.

Her picks recently have been Tyrconnell Irish Whiskey the Sherry cask version.
For Scotch Old Pultney 17 year old. The 10 she finds very nice as well.

Bourbons Sazerac Rye 18 year old. When we began buying this, it was $35/bottle. The prices now are crazy!

These releases as well:
