Is it normal for this program to be chewing up 50% of my CPU? I had to stop it as it slowed down my work pc.

My pc at work is a dual cpu running at 2992 Mhz (each CPU) with 1 GB of RAM, so it's not that slow to begin with........

It should allocate itself to a lower setting when more programs are in use as its priority will lower. So no I don't see how it is normal for it to hog up resources.

I have had it running on mine and it hasn't slowed mine down at all.

I usually have Windows Media Player open, My Accounting Program, Adobe Distiller, Photoshop, pagemaker, Outlook and Firefox.

Golden here.

Absolutley.
If you want to let [email protected] take up 100% of the idle cpu you have two options.

1) You can run the SMP client, but your processor probably isn't fast enough to hit the deadlines. It's a really really high-performance client designed for quad cores.

2) You can run two console clients. This is what I do on most of my machines because the SMP client isn't 100% stable and hidden yet. The only thing you need to make sure is to run the client with the -local flag and set different machine ID's in the advanced settings.

Since you've got a dual processor setup, [email protected] will only take up 1/Xth total processor power where X = number of core (virtual such as hyperthreading, or real such as multi core / processor).
You can do what I suggested above and install another console version with the corrent flag and settings.

As for the [email protected] slowing down your PC, are you sure? Since a) it's running at lowest priority and b) it's only taking 50% of your computer it might be psychological...?

Here's a good link for some shortcuts and how to use flags.

We will pass the arstechnica team eggroll in about 3 or 4 days and we should be under 1000 in about 3 weeks.

Wheee.... Good job everyone.

Hard to say - maybe your PS3 will find a cure for being out of shape then you won't have to exercise.

j/k - do the exercise!
