Default get a new set of coils or replace busted shock on current set of J5 coils

Trying to figure out which path to take.

I'm currently riding on a set of J5 coils on my 2013 AWD. The rear passenger shock has failed internally, thus my other thread about clunking noise.

The set of J5 coils was bought back in April from a CL member (JEFFOS69) and I've only put in about 6k miles on it since. From Jeff's time of ownership, he had both front shocks replaced within his first 6 months. That's a worrisome history of failures all within the 1st year of ownership (2 front shocks and now one rear shock). Warranty isn't transferable to 2nd owner (and its past the 1 year warranty anyways). I'm a bit wary dropping more money on getting a replacement shock when things seems to be failing so quickly.

For current J5 owners, have you had any troubles with your set?

Are there any other sets that would be recommended? I know BC Racing has one and can be upgraded with Swift Springs. There's also a set by Megan? How are the ride quality of those sets?

Any other makers that produces coils for the AWD?

thanks!

Ain't nothing like the reliability of a stock setup unfortunately, you'd probably be well served to go back to that.

However, if you still want a drop with comfort and tunability in mind (I'm assuming that why you bought the J5s to begin with) I'd go with an airspring on a coilover shock so that you can tune your ride height, spring rate and damping independent of one another.

That should let you get the height you want with a comfortable spring pressure and decent damping characteristics.

... Stock setup ain't bad though... just rides a bit high =)

Can't go back to stock...it's just way too high

Airsprings? I doubt they have anything that's compatible with the 4G GS.

I think only RS-R and J5 make AWD coilovers. So, you'd have to buy either new set or just get the RS-R down springs and use your stock struts.

EDIT:

Nevermind, looks like BR Racing is now making AWD coils as well. Maybe you can workout a deal with BC, just buy their rear struts and use your J5 springs ?

I'm currently having the issue of that sound but Ive had them for about 3 years and I was the first adopters. The only issue is that we can't see a leak, the other mechanic stated that it could be the sway bar link so going today to verify with my installer.

Yeah, but I've been advised to stay away from BC Racing coils as well because it isn't of the greatest quality.

I might lean towards the RS-R coils at this point if there's more owners of J5 coils having the same issues.

I really liked my bc On the 2gs. No issues at all and rides smooth with swift.

My j5 ride seems weird... but I still need to adjust the dampening. Of course, my warranty ended before I even installed it.

I say, give bc a chance.

thanks for the update

I went ahead and ordered a replacement shock from J5.

If that goes kaput, I'll probably go back to the stock suspension and get a pair of lowering springs

What was wrong with your sway bar links?

Well we thought it could be the seat bar links but they are fine as well so we are scratching our head. Sounds like something is loose and there is no leakage around the strut. So lost at the moment but will get it replaced since I think it's the strut.
