Default L-Tuned Steering ECU?

Well I was finally tired of seeing my 4x4 wheel gap on my GS4 and finally decided to get the L-Tuned Springs, Shocks, and Steering ECU. I just picked them up today (Thx Angel/Steve). Having them installed by Todd next week.

My question now is, I just installed the new ECU myself and notice that the new L-Tuned ECU has the same parts number as the old ECU, on the ECU itself. Is that right? Are the numbers on the old and new the same? It came in bubble bag with the instructions. Did i get the same old ECU or the new L-Tuned one? Can someone help me out?

You got the new one. They didn't change the injection molding with the part number on it for the few upgrade steering ECUs they sell. I'd mark the new one with "new" using a marker so you don't mix them up!

Hey bitkahuna, thanks for the info. I already marked the new and the old one just in case.

and to clarify
The ECU is the SAME if you have a 2002 or 2003 GS430. 2001 is open to debate however.

You'd think that you'd be able to tell the difference between the two by driving the vehicle. Is there no noticeable difference between the two in the drive? If not, why spend the $$$ on the ECU?

You can easily tell the difference. I've driven two different cars (2000 GS400 and 2001 GS430), before and after the change.

When I put mine in, I swear there was a difference. Then I did it blindly (i.e. switched it and had a third party drive it) - there was no difference. I even had them switch it on me and I could not figure out which was which.

Later, down the road, I found out from a Toyota drivetrain engineer that for sure the 2002 and 2003 GS430s already have them. He was pretty sure 2001s had them too but other's on the board (Bit included) say it isn't so.

From what I've heard/read it seems like it was switched during the 2001 model year, so some may have a newer one and some the old one.

What I'd like to know, is if Lexus changed it in the later models, why have a steering ECU at all? What neccesitates the need for an ECU? There is nothing to upgrade.

Does anyone know if the ECU is the same for a 2002 GS300?

Not sure what you couldn't follow from the quote you gave, but if you have a 2002 or newer, apparently you don't need to get an L-Tuned ECU.

Why have a steering ECU upgrade you mean? Because cars prior to some time in the 2001 model year it seems didn't have the same ECU.

Since I own a 2002 GS300, I'm not sure whether they are giving different Steering ECU to the GS430 and GS300, I just want to know if I have to upgrade to a L-Tuned Steering ECU on my GS. Thanks a lot.

I believe that the only GS300's that might possibly have the L-Tuned ECU are the SportDesign editions, but even that is under debate... If you don't have the SD model, you probably do not have the L-Tuned ECU (assuming no previous owner/s upgraded it).
